What is Reward & Reminder™?

The primary goal of the Reward & Reminder™ is to eliminate the issuance of citations by seeking to assist communities in monitoring compliance and identify retailers in need of additional assistance. Local adults and youth teams are visiting tobacco retailers in your community. If clerks refuse to sell tobacco or the vending machines cannot be accessed by teens, then clerks earn recognition and incentives for doing the right thing. Reminders are given out for failing to check for age or allowing illegal sales. Law enforcement officers may also conduct inspections in your community. Illegal sales carry the possibility of administrative or civil fines. Data from visits is collected and entered into the PAXForms™ Online data management system allowing you to measure and evaluate impact in real time.

Reward & Reminder™ works because it is science-based. It is the result of considerable study of human behavior. The studies show that public recognition and reward of good behavior by stores and clerks for doing the right thing and not selling tobacco to minors reduces illegal sales of tobacco to minors faster than enforcement, which is then saved for people who are really intent on breaking the law.

Reward & Reminder™ works because it is inclusive. Everyone is involved. The program is not aimed at youth; it includes them and the community, too. Everyone is given a role in sharing the responsibility of protecting the health and safety of our youth.

Reward & Reminder™ works because it is positive. The program works to reinforce and recreate positive behaviors as a means of reducing negative behaviors, such as illegal tobacco sales to minors, or youth tobacco use.
